Patch Notes: Tilescapes Beta 2.0

you know whats up. I have to release this version quick before everybody runs out of money and time because of the Switch 2 releasing this week. Which I totally didn't forget about because I can't afford it or anything.

This is the first paid version of the game! I stand firm in my belief that $10 USD is a fair price for this game now and going forward. If you've already donated for the Early Access and Beta 1 (which, as of writing this, is only three of you), you'll get this version for free, though. Also, once you buy the game, it will cost you nothing to update to newer versions. TL;DR, you only need to pay once for Tilescapes, and you'll get all future versions for free!!!

(You can also continue to play versions Beta 1.3 and earlier for free. I might make new past versions available for free going forward also)

All that being said, this might be the biggest update to the game so far. So many things have gotten overhauled and polished that at least to me it feels like a whole new game almost. That's why I'm calling it "Beta 2.0" instead of "Beta 1.4." I don't really see the point in just sticking to the "1.X" version format forever (like some other games I know) and it doesn't matter anyway! It's my game, who cares!

Additions

  • Items:
    • Added Bulgofruit.
      • Currently serve no purpose. An excellent opening for a changelog!
      • Obtained from trees.
    • Added Sticks.
      • Crafting ingredient.
      • Crafted from two wood plank tiles.
  • Decorations:
    • Added Doors.
      • Crafted with four wood planks.
      • Left-clicking a closed door will open it and vice versa.
      • Doors cannot be walked through while closed, but can be walked through while open.
    • Added Seeds.
      • Seeds grow into Trees after 100 to 300 Moments, changing appearance into a little sprout after about halfway through its growth.
      • Seeds will only grow when placed on grass or dirt.
      • Seeds' growth can be accelerated by surrounding the tile they are placed on with either grass or dirt.
      • Leaves tiles will drop between 0 and 2 seeds when broken.
      • Can be walked over.
    • Added Trees.
      • Trees start out leaved, and can be right-clicked when leaved to remove and obtain between 1 to 4 leaves.
      • The leaves on a tree will re-grow after 100 to 1000 Moments, accelerated by the presence of grass or dirt around the tree.
      • If given between 100 and 1000 Moments while leaved (accelerated by the presence of dirt or grass around the tree), trees will grow Bulgofruit. Right-clicking while the tree has bulgofruit on it will remove and yield between 1 to 3 of them.
      • A tree with no leaves or Bulgofruit on it will yield 1 log when destroyed.
      • Cannot be walked through.
  • Tiles:
    • Added Logs.
      • Obtained from trees.
      • Can be crafted into wood planks.
  • World Generation:
    • Added world sizes.
      • Somewhat experimental feature, chosen during world creation.
      • Two world size types are currently available: "Small" is the existing 128 x 128 tile world size, and "Large" is a new 256 x 256 tile size.
      • Large worlds don't run very well on my (admittedly terrible) PC, but maybe they'll run better on yours?

Changes:

  • Backgrounds:
    • Reduced the color palettes of background images for increased visual clarity.
  • Decorations:
    • Workbenches can no longer be walked through.
    • Workbenches are now crafted from two sticks and two wood planks.
    • It is no longer possible to place or remove tiles or decorations, or attack entities while the Crafting UI is open.
    • Moving the player will now automatically close the Crafting UI.
    • Closing the Crafting UI now causes all items on the Workbench to be returned to the player.
  • Moments:
    • You no longer get points just for incrementing the Moments counter.
  • Main menu:
    • Added a new theme song to the main menu, created specifically for Tilescapes by Pnox.
    • An announcer will now read out the name of the selected player species.
    • Added world size selection screen.
  • Player:
    • Inventory:
      • Shift + Left Click will now instantly move the item stack being hovered over to either the first available slot in the player's inventory, or into/out of the Crafting UI if it is open.
      • The loot script has been improved, now preferring a slot occupied by the item being obtained over an empty slot, even if the empty slot appears before the stacking slot. This behavior also exists with Shift + Left-Clicking.
      • Items in the player's inventory are no longer animated.
    • The behavior of the player's cursor has changed significantly:

      • The player's cursor has now been fully separated into two distinct objects: the Cursor, which controls the placement of tiles and decorations, and the Reticle, which dictates the position the player is aiming their gun at.
      • The Cursor now shows when a tile or decoration can be placed or destroyed more effectively:
        • While hovering over an empty position adjacent to a tile, if the player's selected item is a tile, that tile will be shown faintly pulsing to show that it can be placed in this position.
        • If the player's selected item is a decoration, and the Cursor is hovering over a position occupied by a tile, that decoration will be shown faintly pulsing to show that it can be placed there.
        • If the player's selected item (or lack thereof) cannot be placed in the Cursor's current position, and that position is over a tile, the Cursor will blink white to show that the tile can be removed. If the Cursor is hovering over a decoration, that decoration will pulse white to show it can be removed.
        • If the player's selected item cannot be placed in the Cursor's current position, and a tile cannot be removed in the Cursor's current position, or the player's mouse is hovering outside of the range of the Cursor, then the Cursor will be invisible.
      • The Reticle is used to aim your gun at other entities.
        • It is now possible to attack any entity currently on-screen, even if it is beyond the range of the Cursor.
        • Added a new Reticle sprite that is displayed at the player's mouse's current position at all times (unless the mouse leaves the bounds of the program window).
        • Pressing left-click at any time while it is not possible to place a tile or decoration will fire a projectile at that location. There is a slight variance to where the projectile hits, and you have to be pretty precise with your aim to hit your target, so it's possible to miss if you're not careful.
        • The gun can now be fired regardless of the Reticle's current position (i.e. even if you are not currently aiming at an entity) and this will still cause a Moment to pass.
        • UFOs now become translucent, showing anything beneath them, whenever the Reticle hovers over them, rather than the Cursor.
  • Tiles:
    • Leaves tiles now drop between 0 and 2 seeds when broken, rather than themselves.
    • Wood planks no longer generate naturally.
  • UI:
    • Changed all remaining instances of the Determination Mono font to an original font, Boogeyblock. The credits have been changed to reflect this.
    • The "STATUS: PAUSED" text in the HUD will now display while the credits screen is open.
    • The currently selected species will now jitter in place in the species select screen.
    • Pressing Enter to progress the main menu will now play a sound to provide that little bit of feedback that was sort of missing.
    • Fixed a random crash that occurred in between the main menu and loading screen caused by attempting to load an out-of-range hint.

Thank you very much for reading all the way to the end. As always, if you'd like to keep up-to-date with me and the development of Tilescapes, you can join my Discord server.
